Zopiclone · UK information guide

Children and young people

Why zopiclone is not routinely licensed for children and when specialist advice is required.

Medical information: This page provides general educational information and is not a substitute for personal medical advice.
Quick answer: Zopiclone is not routinely licensed for children. A child or young person with sleep problems needs assessment of the underlying cause rather than adult sleeping-tablet advice.

Why adult dosing cannot be copied

Children differ in body size, brain development, metabolism and vulnerability to sedation. Never give a child an adult zopiclone tablet.

When specialist advice matters

Any use outside the licensed population requires specialist clinical judgement, an identified indication and careful monitoring.

Safer first steps

Sleep routine, behavioural support and assessment of anxiety, pain, breathing problems or neurodevelopmental needs are usually more appropriate starting points.

Urgent warning signs

Seek urgent help if a child is unusually difficult to wake, breathing abnormally or has taken a tablet accidentally.
